Annie and Vanessa

By the time Lizzy was 3 years old she had a whole playgroup of friends that she could name. She would ask to play with specific friends.

Annie has had a much different start to her life than Lizzy has. When I see what she has had I feel a loss for her since she has not had the chance to make the friendships that her sister has. If you showed Lizzy pictures of her playgroup friends that had been taken 7 months prior she would point and name those friends. We have pictures of Annie playing with friends while in China. She points to these children and has a look of recognition on her face then it becomes a look of frustration as she has nothing to call them. Since Annie has only had hearing since this past April she could not hear what these children were called. She does not respond when we call her by her Chinese name nor does she point to pictures of herself and acknowledge that she is Yali. She just doesn’t know that is what they were calling her.

While in school Annie has made some friends. Her best bud is Vanessa they share a mutual love of Dora. They are just so cute together. It is delightful to me to hear her ask me about Vanessa. When the bus comes in the morning she wants to know if Vanessa is on it so she has a buddy to sit next too.

Vanessa’s name has become music to my ears.
