Mid-Autumn Moon Festival 2010

Now that Annie is home I have gotten more active in a playgroup made up of moms formed through adoption. This group is headed by a wonderful woman named Kerry M. who organizes these amazing events that help us help our children learn about their birth culture.

Lizzy loved having the chance to play with some of the friends that she is in Chinese Dance with and sees at culture camp.

Ms. Kerry and Laoshi Helen are teaching the children about the festival and explaining what families who live in China do to celebrate.

Along with tasting moon cakes there were crafts to be done.  Daddy helped Lizzy while I helped Annie get a snack.

Laoshi Helen taugh the girls how to make Bing.  It is a type of bread that involves rolling and sprinkling of oil and seasoning.  The final step is to twist it and flatten it out with your hands again.  Lizzy loved learning how to cook it.  This will be something added to our cooking rotation.

The finished bing:

After hearing the story of the Moon Goddess, making crafts and eating bing the children got to try some Pomelo.  In China they eat the sweet fruit of the Pomelo it tastes much like a very sweet grapefruit.  After eating all of the pulp they take the skin and wear it on their head like a hat as a way of being silly and celebrating the Autmun Harvest.

This was a lot of fun.  I have known many of these moms since before Lizzy came home.  It is amazing to see how all of their dreams have turned into these beautiful children.  I look foward to sharing more fun times and cultural experiences with these families.
